The 7 main chakras are energy centers in our energetic body. These energy centers are analogous to the different organ systems we have in our physical body (ex: skeletal, digestive). The same way that these organ systems have certain foods and nutrients that best support them, so do the chakras. In this post you’ll learn exactly which foods promote the best health in each chakra. The best thing is that it’s a color coded system, so if you can remember the colors of each chakra you’ll be able to spot out the foods that keep them healthy.

Root chakra (Muladhara)

Root vegetables

The root chakra is all about Earth energy, and since root vegetables grow underground they are loaded with Earth energy.

  • Potatoes of all kinds

  • Turnips

  • Beets

  • Carrots

  • Parsnips

  • Jicama

Red colored foods

The color red matches the vibration of this chakra. Red is the color of this chakra and this is why you’ll always see it depicted in this color

  • Tomatoes

  • Pomegranates

  • Raspberries

  • Radishes

Protein rich foods

The root chakra affects our colon (large intestine), immune system, muscles, blood, and skeletal system. Protein rich foods contain nutrients which support these various body systems (ex: iron, zinc, calcium).

  • Beans and lentils

  • Nuts and seeds

  • Eggs*

  • Dairy*

  • Meat*

*Animal based foods are very heavy with earth energy, so much so that they can easily provide excess energy to the root chakra. Excess energy in the root chakra manifests as constipation, feeling sluggish, and feeling lethargic. So keep that in mind if you eat these foods and be sure to balance it out with plant based protein which don’t have this effect.

I have a more detailed post about root chakra foods here.

Sacral chakra (Swadhisthana)

Fats

Fats are very nourishing to the sacral chakra because fats signify pleasure and satisfaction— two things that the sacral chakra governs in our lives.

  • Olives and avocado

  • Extra virgin olive oil and virgin avocado oil

  • Virgin coconut oil

  • Nuts and seeds

Orange colored foods

The color orange matches the vibration of this chakra. Orange is the color of the sacral chakra and this is why you’ll always see it depicted in this color

  • Peaches

  • Pumpkin

  • Butternut squash

  • Persimmon

  • Oranges

  • Carrots

  • Orange bell pepper

Fluids

Water is the element of this chakra and therefore water is extremely nourishing for the sacral chakra. Stay hydrated with

  • Water

  • Tea

  • Broth

Solar plexus chakra (Manipura)

Whole grains

Emphasis on whole grains and not refined grains. Whole grains provide energy, while refined grains (ex: white bread, white rice, white flour) will zap energy from this chakra.

  • Whole wheat

  • Farro

  • Teff

  • Oatmeal

  • Corn

  • Quinoa

Yellow colored foods

The color yellow matches the vibration of this chakra. Yellow is the color of the solar plexus chakra and this is why you see it depicted in this color

  • Pineapple

  • Ginger

  • Turmeric

  • Yellow summer squash

  • Spaghetti squash

  • Lemons

Heart chakra (Anahata)

Leafy greens

The heart chakra loves green, leafy vegetables of all kinds. This includes both cooked and raw forms.

  • Collard greens

  • Spinach

  • Kale

  • Arugula

  • Cabbage

  • Swiss chard

  • Green herbs (ex: cilantro, parsley, mint)

Green colored foods

The color green matches the vibration of this chakra. Yellow is the color of the solar plexus chakra and this is why you see it depicted in this color

  • Brussels sprouts

  • Broccoli

  • Cucumber

  • Zucchini

  • Okra

  • Green onion

Cacao

I’m not talking about cocoa or chocolate, I’m talking about cocao here. Cacao is a tropical fruit that produces pods which is what cacao is made from. Cacao has a long history of spiritual use in ancient mesoamarican civilizations such as the Aztecs, Mayans, and Olmecs. Ceremonial use of cacao is a divine way to connect with mama cacao as a spirit guide. The vibration of cacao resonates deeply with the heart chakra and is a powerful tool to restore balance in the heart center.

Throat chakra (Vishuddha)

Tree fruits

The throat chakra is all about authenticity, so it responds to foods that emit that vibration. Tree fruits have an aura of authenticity because they will not fall from the tree until they are ready…that is of course if humans don’t intervene.

  • Mango

  • Apple

  • Oranges

  • Plums

  • Nectarines

  • Grapefruit

  • Cherries

Third eye chakra (Ajna)

Blue and Purple colored foods

Indigo is the color that resonates with the third eye, but we don’t really find that color in food. However indigo is a cross between blue and purple, and those are colors we do find in foods.

  • Blueberries

  • Purple cabbage

  • Eggplant

  • Acai berry

Crown chakra (Sahasrara)

The crown chakra is the least dense of all the chakras, which means that it is the furthest removed from our physical world, and that includes foods. So when it comes to foods for the crown chakra, the main focus is on quality of foods rather than the specific types of foods.

Organic, unadulterated foods

The crown chakra is about purity, therefore it is best supported by choosing foods that are wholesome and unprocessed. To support your crown chakra try reducing or eliminating the following foods

  • Refined grains (ex: white bread, white rice, white flour)

  • Processed foods (ex: chips, cookies, pastries, candies)

  • Fried foods

  • Added sugars (don’t worry about natural sugars in fruits, veggies, and grains)

  • Artificial food colorings (ex: yellow no. 5)

  • Artificial sweeteners (ex: Splenda, Sweet n Low). Monk fruit and stevia are natural and not considered artificial

  • Artificial flavorings

Caution: Be careful to not be overly restrictive, because that will inevitably do way more harm than good. Being overly restrictive and meticulous about “clean” eating almost always results in one of two things. Either you end up with a God-complex and believe you are better than everyone because of the way you eat. Or if that doesn't happen you become insanely critical of yourself and others and you hold yourself and others to unreasonably high standards.
