Our first chakra is called the root chakra and is also known as muladhara in Sanskrit. It’s located at the base of the spine and is associated with the skeletal system, muscles, blood, colon, and prostate. The root chakra affects our basic survival needs, such as food, water, shelter, clothing, and money. This chakra is heavily centered around our connection to Mother Earth and our ancestors. It helps us feel a sense of belonging in the Earth plane. A healthy root chakra allows you to feel safe, secure, stable, be resourceful, and resilient.

Signs of energetic blockages in the root chakra include problems with money (such as a “lack” mindset), hoarding things, inability to maintain a job or any commitments, sluggish energy, constipation, depression, issues with body image, problems with over or undereating, and a fear of change.

This a quick list of the best foods to feed your root chakra

  • Red colored foods (ex: beets, tomato, pomegranate)

  • Root vegetables (ex: potatoes, carrots)

  • Protein rich foods (ex: beans, lentils)

Red colored foods

Red is the color that resonates with the vibration of the root chakra. In terms of energy and energy healing, the color red typically symbolizes health and vitality at a cellular level. The shade of red I’m referring is to that of a red apple, or a ruby-red. When scanning a person's energy field and this shade of red comes up in the root chakra, it’s a sign of healthy energy flowing in that area.

Examples of red colored foods that are good for the root chakra

  • Beets

  • Tomatoes

  • Pomegranate

  • Raspberries

  • Radishes

  • Red kidney beans

  • Red lentils

Root vegetables

Since root veggies grow underground it makes sense that they are more dense with Earth energy, compared to other produce that grows above ground. This deep, rooted energy that root vegetables carry resonates with the energy of the root chakra.

Protein rich foods

Foods that are high in protein resonate with the root chakra because this chakra exerts influence over the health of our musculoskeletal system (ie: muscles and bones). Animal based protein contains very heavy, and dense earth energy. This heavy energy is why meat and dairy often contribute to constipation and slowed digestion. Additionally, many people can attest to experiencing feelings of heaviness and sluggishness after consuming a meal heavy in meat. This is usually called the “itis”, and if you know, you know.

Since the energy of animal based protein is so dense, and slow moving, I always steer people towards consuming 100% plant based protein. Constipation is a physical manifestation of an energetic blockage in the root chakra. If you eat meat and/or dairy and suffer from constipation, I highly recommend experimenting with removing meat and/or dairy and replacing those foods with high fiber plant based protein (ex: beans, lentils, nuts, seeds).

Examples of protein rich foods that are good for the root chakra

  • Beans (all kinds)

  • Lentils (all kinds)

  • Nuts

  • Seeds
